Gardenia Plants

by

My professor, Dr. Litchfield, gave me four of gardenia plants in one-gallon pot each. They are about 1 foot tall. She said the flowers produce very good smell. They are medium bush size and nice for the garden. Since I still have space in the backyard garden, gardenia plants are going to be nice addition to fill up those empty area. She tried to explain to me what gardenia looks like, but I wasn’t sure if I ever saw it. Well, I have heard about the name though. So, I “googled” it to see what they are going to look like when they bloom.

Can’t wait to see all of them bloom!

Philips Skype Phone (No need PC connection)

Fuzzy Logic

by

Have you ever heard this word “Fuzzy Logic”? Can you guess what it is?

I was shopping for a rice cooker and ran across to some of the rice cookers which mentioned to the new advanced fuzzy logic technology. A lot of reviews praised how good this technology was, but all of them fail to explain why and how it was great.

It doesn’t make sense to me when I saw the word “Fuzzy.” How can FUZZY technology help to cook rice? I really cannot think of any reason…. maybe that’s it. Logic has something to do with reasoning. Fuzzy Logic is meant to confuse me, right? Ha Ha Ha… 😯

So, I did some research about it. Fuzzy logic definition is somewhat I had in mind at first. Fuzzy means imprecise or uncertainty, and of course logic is reasoning and analytical process. According to WiKi, “Fuzzy logic is a form of multi-valued logic derived from fuzzy set theory to deal with reasoning that is approximate rather than precise.”

I used to think that sometimes things just weren’t black or white. One of the basic computer programming, for example, is If-else. If this happen, then do this. But in real world, several things can happen at the same time, and it would waste so much time just to do mutiple if-then-else to cover all the probability. I can see how the fussy logic comes to handy in this kind of situation.

Examples:(from Wiki)

Rules are usually expressed in the form:
IF variable IS set THEN action

For example, an extremely simple temperature regulator that uses a fan might look like this:
IF temperature IS very cold THEN stop fan
IF temperature IS cold THEN turn down fan
IF temperature IS normal THEN maintain level
IF temperature IS hot THEN speed up fan

Notice there is no “ELSE”. All of the rules are evaluated, because the temperature might be “cold” and “normal” at the same time to differing degrees.

Is it interesting??? Adding to that, I read some articles online, they mentioned that a lot of home appliances are using this technology to produce the best outcome and reducing the errors which can be caused by various factors.

Bling Bling Benz

A friend of mine, Kit, sent me a bunch of pictures of the most expensive and outraged Mercidez Benz ever! It’s a bling bling Benz!!! I think it’s just ridiculous. Well… I’m sure that some people might find it fascinating. It’s ONLY 4.8 million… that’s all… 😆

Today, I visited Yahoo web site and found some interesting pictures which people emailed the most. There were 50 of them, but I chose three to share. Take a look!

Tornado in Iowa (June 2008)
This is a giant tornado touching the ground in Orchard, Iowa. A lady took this photo from her front door. Luckily, no one got hurt because the tornao went back up to the cloud. However, I read some news there were other tonados hit the same town and killed four children. That’s horrible…

A male sea dragon is carrying eggs
This is a rare photo taken at the aqurium in Atlanta, GA. The male sea dragon is carrying the eggs. I have visited Atlanta many many times, but haven’t had a chance to go to the Aqurium yet. Well…almost… I went during the weekend and I believe it was the first week of grand opening. It was crowded, so I didn’t get in.

flood from Cedar river, Iowa
The water overflowing from the Cedar river floods Iowa. The news said people are asked to evacuate. This year, it has to be the worst diaster for Iowa.

I’m not really sure what’s going on with all the diaster around the word. It’s getting worse and worse. Is it our time to pay back to the mother nature??? Who knows!

by

I have been packing lunch to work for couple weeks now. I’m trying to control the portion of the meal. Often, when I go out to the restaurant, I would eat more than I need to. That’s not helpful at all when I’m watching my weight. The first week of lunch prepartion was OK. During the second week, I feel like this is getting bored. I’m sick of my lunch. I need to do something! Then, the word “Bento” came to my mind. That’s right! Bento would make my lunch more interesting. I not only love to eat, but also love to cook. I want to be creative in food preparation and presentation. So, I thought doing Bento might be fun.

Have you ever heard about Bento? You probably have seen this word in some Japanese restaurant’s menu. Food will come in a nice plastic lacquerware box with different compartnents inside. You will get all kind of side dishes, such as shrimp tempura, pickled vegetables, fried fish, etc.

By definition, Bento is a single-portion takeout or home-packed meal common in Japanese crusine. It’s common for Japanese to spend considerable time and energy to produce an appealing boxed lunch for loving ones.

I have some pictures below (from Flickr). When Japanese people want to do something appealing, they really make it happen. They are very creative and have all kinds of cool gadgets to make Bento.

Cacti Are Hot

by

I’ve been collecting cacti for a couple months now. I’m very happy with them. They are low maintenance and producing beautiful flowers. Some of my friends don’t believe that a cactus can produce a flower.

In the past, Thai people had little to none knowledge about the cactus. We have seen only a few species of cactus. We always think that cacti are ugly and so not interesting. The common characteristics of cactus which most Thai people have in their mind are living in dessert, standing tall with a lot of spikes, ugly looking, representing the droughtiness and uncivilization, etc. Those are misconception. Theere are like millions of scpecies with different looks.

I found cacti very interesting. it’s fun to watch them flower. Those flowers have scents too! And, now some of them are blooming!

Blacks in Wedding

by

This past memorial weekend I had a chance to attend one of my best friend’s wedding at Foley, AL. Everything looked so neat and was arranged perfectly. My friend, Katherine, looked very beautiful. I was helping her shoot video during the ceremony. Everything went well (I hope…I didn’t even look at those video footages yet ha!)

Everybody dressed up nicely. I noticed that most of the guests chose to wear black. This was weird….it did strike me in an odd way…uhhh wow… I was thinking in my mind if I were attending to the wrong ceremony????

Why did I think like that?…It might be because I came from different culture and tradition -l am from Thailand. I had to think (and pretty sure) that most Asian countries probably have the same perception of how wedding themes should look like. I have to tell you that Black is a “NO! NO!” to wear to the wedding. In Thailand, we would wear bright colors because wedding day is a happy and joyful ceremony. We believe colors represents live and black represent death. So, we would wear black to attend to a funeral ceremony. If you wear black to attend to any wedding ceremony in Thailand, they probably think you are disrespectful and try to crash the wedding. They would immediately escort you escorted to the street. Even if you are wearing dark colors, they probably would think you are idiotic and disrespectful too.

I know that in American wedding way colors, black or white clothes mean nothing, but it’s just me coming from different culture. I just could help but thinking that why those people were so crazy and disrespectful to my friend! Ha Ha Ha…

Anyway… Congratulations to Katherine!!
